Neal Brown’s Name Noticeably Absent from List of Coaches Most Likely to Get Fired Next
Even though WVU fans are busy discussing why Neal Brown should be fired, his name is noticeably absent from a list of coaches most likely to be fired next.
Brown’s Mountaineers entered the season with people dreaming of a Big 12 title, but currently sit at 3-4 (2-2, Big 12). West Virginia is also coming off back-to-back losses in big games at home. Iowa State beat WVU 28-16 and then Kansas State dominated Brown’s team to the tune of 45-18.
In between those losses, Brown’s comments about why fans games can still be fun for fans despite losing added some extra embarrassment that seemed to put fans over the edge.
But despite the vibe of the fanbase, oddsmakers have a long list of coaches on a hot seat than Brown.
The chart below shows the coaches listed before Brown via BetOnline.com.
Trent Dilfer (UAB) | 5/2 | (+250) |
Ryan Walters (Purdue) | 3/1
Billy Napier (Florida) | 4/1
Dave Aranda (Baylor) | 4/1
Brent Pry (Virginia Tech) | 10/1
Mike Norvell (Florida State) | 10/1
Ryan Day (Ohio State) | 10/1
DeShaun Foster (UCLA) | 12/1

Brent Venables (Oklahoma) | 16/1
Lincoln Riley (USC) | 20/1
Mack Brown (UNC) | 25/1 | |
Sherrone Brown (Michigan) | 33/1 |
Of course, lists like this are not just favoriting in what anyone believes should happen, but also what’s likely to actually occur. WVU fans may point to Brown’s overall rerecord and a lack of big wins, yet that doesn’t necessarily mean West Virginia is in a hurry to make a change.
Odds are solid WVU director of athletics Wren Baker, who is known for not making knee-jerk decisions, is going to give Brown at least the rest of the season to try right the ship again, especially after he proved doubters wrong in 2023.
