WVU Women’s Basketball Drops Ranked Tilt at Baylor

WVU Women’s Basketball saw their three-game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday, as they fell 75-65 to the No. 25 ranked Baylor Bears in Waco.
The No. 18 ranked Mountaineers (19-5, 9-4 Big 12) made just 37 percent of their shots, including a brutal 6-of-25 clip from three. While they forced 16 turnovers, Baylor still managed to find success moving the ball, picking up 19 assists, including seven apiece from Darianna Littlepage-Buggs and Sarah Andrews.
Jordan Harrison led the Mountaineers in scoring with 20 points before fouling out with just over three minutes to play. JJ Quinerly and Jordan Thomas both spent most of the fourth quarter in foul trouble, limiting West Virginia’s ability to play aggressively and mount a comeback. While Quinerly racked up 17 points, she did so on an inefficient 5-of-19 shooting.
The Mountaineers kept pace with Baylor early in a first period that saw a tie and five lead changes. A 12-4 run toward the end of the half helped the Bears establish a double digit lead, but even that happened in slow motion: Baylor inched ahead rather than landing a knockout blow.
West Virginia’s best chance at a comeback took place midway through the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run that cut their deficit to nine, but Baylor’s Jada Walker drew an and-1 — the play that ended Harrison’s night early — to snap the streak and let the air out for the Mountaineers.
WVU Women’s Basketball will return home for their next game, senior day, when they host the Cincinnati Bearcats beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15.
