WVU Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader, Remains Unbeaten

WVU Baseball claimed their series with the Lipscomb Bison on Sunday, sweeping their doubleheader thanks to a shutout and a late rally.
The Mountaineers (6-0) put at least two runners aboard in three of the first four innings of their afternoon game but couldn’t break through. Lipscomb loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth, chasing West Virginia starter Robby Porco from the game, but Chase Meyer entered and elicited a full count strikeout to escape the threat.
The Mountaineers found their swings the following frame with a leadoff homer from Chase Swain, then Kyle West pushed the lead to 3-0 with a two-run blast.
Logan Sauve led off the seventh with a triple, scoring on a Sam White groundout, then a Lipscomb error helped Armani Guzman score as a pinch runner to go up 5-0. Meyer punched out five batters in 3.1 relief innings, shutting the Bison down and picking up the win.
West Virginia’s offense woke up faster in game two, a 4-2 win, as Michael Perazza hit a solo shot in the first inning. Lipscomb made it 1-1 in the fourth when their first three batters reached, then both teams plated a run the following inning — the Mountaineers’ on a Sam White RBI double — as West Virginia struggled to maintain a lead.
Guzman’s base running came up crucial once again in the seventh when he zipped home on a passed ball, the eventual winning run. This time it was Carson Estridge with the relief heroics as he piggybacked off starter Gavin Van Kempen, closing out the game with 4.2 scoreless innings.
WVU Baseball looks to sweep the series starting at 12 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 24.
