WVU Baseball Wins Home Opener to Continue Undefeated Start

GRANVILLE, W.Va. — WVU baseball continued its perfect start to the season, winning its 2025 home opener at Kendrick Family Ballpark Wednesday.

West Virginia (8-0) took an early lead and continually added on en route to an 8-4 victory over visiting Ohio.

The Mountaineers struck early as back-to-back doubles by Sam White and Kyle West plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Michael Perazza singled in Westin the bottom of the third to put WVU up 4-0.

The Bobcats (1-6) got on the board in the top of the fourth on a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly to cut WVU’s lead in half, 4-2.

Mac Stiffler started on the mound for West Virginia and lasted 3.1 innings, allowing a pair of runs. The freshman struck out two, walked three and surrendered two hits.

The Mountaineers responded in the bottom of the fourth when Logan Sauve singled in  Armani Guzman to go back up 5-2.

Ohio threatened in the top of the sixth, loading the bases with two outs. WVU nearly got out of the jam with no damage, but a dropped third strike allowed a runner to come home and made it a two-run game again.

Grant Hussey, who was just 2-22 entering at the plate entering the game, picked up his second hit of the game with an opposite-field home run in the bottom of the sixth. The solo shot was the 38th of Hussey’s career, adding on to his all-time WVU record.

Sauve doubled home Jace Rinehart later in the frame to push WVU’s lead up to five runs, 8-3.

Ohio added a run in the top of the eighth, but West Virginia was able to close out their eighth straight win to start the season.

Tyler Hutson threw the final two innings to lock down the win.

Sauve finished with three hits and a pair of RBI while West hit two doubles and drove in two. Hussey had two hits, a single and the home run. The Mountaineers collected 13 hits overall with six going for extra bases. Ohio managed four runs on just five hits.

WVU baseball heads back south this weekend for a four-game series against Queens in North Carolina.
